Q: “Is it appropriate for a female guest to wear a white dress (short, lace) to a friend’s daughter’s wedding? I really like the dress. It’s perfect.”
A: According to etiquette guidelines, it is not appropriate for anyone other than the bride to wear white to a wedding. However, we have seen recent fashion and bridal party trends that say otherwise. TLC’s Chris Obenschain says that guests can wear white if their attire is dramatically different than what the bride is wearing, as one wouldn’t want to upstage the bride.
I tend to lean more toward the traditional side on this. Selecting a colored dress that is both appropriate for season and the formality of the wedding might be a safer bet. There are so many great patterns and colors out there, your options really are endless!
